Context of IPTS' research activities

Europe is facing acute energy and environmental challenges shared by all member states: how to secure competitive and clean energy for Europe against a backdrop of climate change, growing global energy demand and future supply uncertainties.

Through its international agreements the EU has endorsed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its energy consumption by 20% by 2020. It is a huge challenge. But this will redirect today's energy economy towards one that will fully meet the challenges of sustainability, competitiveness and security of supply. Moreover it will turn Europe into a highly energy efficient and low CO2 energy economy, able to face future energy challenges.

To achieve this objective, the Commission has proposed a number of energy related measures, like improving energy efficiency, raising the share of renewable energy in the energy mix, etc. IPTS is contributing to this objective providing reliable information on energy and transport technology trends.
