Mission

The mission of the Competitiveness and Sustainability unit is to analyse the social, economic and environmental implications of developments in industry, energy and transport, in particular, with regard to EU policies.

Objectives

  • Identifying and assessing environmental technologies for sustainable production and consumption
  • Identifying products with greatest potential for environmental improvement
  • Developing scenarios for energy supply and demand
  • Providing projections on carbon emissions and delivering economic analysis of the impact of achieving set emission reduction targets
  • Coordinating the exchange of information among experts on "best available techniques" for different industrial processes in support of the IPPC Directive

The mission of the JRC is to provide customer-driven scientific and technical support for the conception, development, implementation and monitoring of EU policies. As a service of the European Commission, the JRC functions as a reference centre of science and technology for the Union. Close to the policy-making process, it serves the common interest of the Member States, while being independent of special interests, whether private or national.
