Driving licence and vehicles registration

Driving licences issued by EU Member States in accordance with Community regulations are valid in Spain. If you drive or intend to drive, you must register your details in the Central Register of Drivers and Minor Offenders ("Registro central de Conductores e Infractores") at the Department of Traffic within six months of the date on which your habitual residence is formalised.

For more information on driving licences and information on recognition of driving licenses issued in non member states, please visit the Ministry of Interior, Department of Traffic web site, and the section dedicated to driving licences on the European Commission's DG Transport and Energy web site.

You can benefit from a tax exemption (12 % of the value of the car) when changing the license plates of your car. The law states that you have to carry out this procedure within the first month of having your name removed from the register of the Consulate of your country of origin. If you were not registered in the Consulate of your country of origin or if you are coming directly from your home country, other documents will be accepted. For more information on the procedure to follow, please contact:
