Abstract

The baseline premise of this report is that eHealth tools and applications have the potential to enable people to access the healthcare and health information services they need, when and where they need them. The report explores an evolving European vision for ICT applications in the healthcare sector. eHealth is seen as an empowering tool for active independent living by older people in an enlarged European Union, with twice the number of member-states, much bigger income disparities, and reversed age characteristics. It analyses the potential eHealth requirements in an enlarged and ageing EU, and compares the "desired situation" in Europe in 2010 with the present status quo of available eHealth applications and practice in order to define European strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats
