This report focuses on the disruptive impact of the demographic changes that Europe will witness over the next 10 to 15 years. Though we are all aware that the European society is ageing, there has been little research that clearly identifies what the effects of this change might be, particularly as regards the labour force in the emerging context of a knowledge-based economy. Even less has been published on its effects on the European New Member States. This report aims to document this issue and demonstrate the urgent need to take measures to avoid major problems in terms of labour shortages. It is our conviction that, if no measures are taken, the growth needed for the New Member States' economies to converge may never happen.
